A fabulous festival on your own doorstep
Glastonbury. We can’t all get tickets, we can’t all afford them. Some of us, frankly, don’t even want to go.
And why would you? Why haul a load of camping gear across the country when you can have a fabulous festival experience in south east London? The Crystal Palace Overground Festival, now in its 9th year, is a community festival organised by the lovely people of SE19.
Held on the 24-28th June, most of the events are free – so no mad internet scramble for tickets – and it’s run entirely by volunteers.
This year’s festival includes loads of music, with something for every taste, comedy, kids activities, food and drink stalls from local traders, and an amazing vintage fair. A full guide to what’s on is available on the festival website [http://crystalpalacefestival.org/whats-on-for-2015/].
With so much on over the five days, it really is one of those things that makes living in south east London so brilliant.
So this is where you come in, the festival relies on its local volunteers to make it happen. Noreen Meehan, Festival Director explains: “Not everyone can afford to go to cultural events in the capital so we want to make sure that we have something here in Crystal Palace that is free for all, where the community can hang out and have a great time together, In order to run the festival, we need people in the local area to help out. We ask if people can donate just 4 hours of their time to make it happen and then they can enjoy the festival too!”
Volunteer roles during the 2015 festival include:
– stewarding and ensuring crowd safety
– helping set up venues throughout the festival
– programme distribution and information sharing
– assisting festival goers
– collecting donations
The best bit is that you get something out of it too. For just a few hours of your time you get to meet like-minded fabulous people, learn more about the area you live in, make friends, be part of something amazing and make to your community
To get involved please sign up on the festival website [http://crystalpalacefestival.org/volunteer/] – you won’t regret it, we promise!!
